The First Lady's Fashion Education Workshop At The White House!

Full Image
In some very exciting news, The High School of Art & Design and The High School of Fashion Industries were invited to the White House on October 8th, 2014 to participate in a Fashion Industry Workshop hosted by none other than First Lady Michelle Obama! High school and university students from across the country were provided an opportunity to network with prominent figures of the Fashion Industry to strengthen their skill sets, open their minds to new concepts and understandings, show young artisans interested in fashion what it takes to succeed in the industry, and the importance of remaining committed to their education. "Students at the workshop learned about everything from construction of a garment and fashion journalism to wearable technology".

This was an incredible honor, which further validates the extraordinary value of CTE programs within our school system. With the continued dedication of teachers, students, partners, and parents, we will provide high-quality career and technical education in New York City for years to come.

Art & Design Wins Blue Ribbon Editor's Choice Award at The Maker Faire in Flushing Meadow Park

On September 20-21, 2014, at the site of the 1964 NY World's Fair, students from the High School of Art & Design demonstrated their love of art and technology with their exhibit "The Science of Art / The Art of Science". The booth paid homage to the original 50-year old exhibit of the Sinclair Dinosaur, the Sinclair Oil mascot for the promotion of fossil fuel. With original memorabilia such as brochures, tickets, and the first actual 3D printed dinosaurs, A&D students expanded on the concept with a multidisciplinary approach to the art of the 3D dinosaur. Utilizing their own 3D printer, A&D blew the crowds away with real-time new dinosaur prints inhabiting their own model architectural habitat and inspired digital illustrations.

Externship at Google Foods

by Eva Yourman, Culinary Instructor at William E. Grady High School.

If you had an opportunity to work at Google for a week would you do it?  That offer was presented to me and I jumped at it.  It was a unique arrangement between the DOE and Restaurant Associates (RA), the corporate food service provider at Google.  As a NYC culinary teacher I spent five days in the RA kitchens experiencing their incredibly unique food program.
Google, in itself, is unlike most employers.  They are industry leaders in providing their employees with whatever they need to bring out their best.  One such way is in their dining program.  All “Googlers” receive free food from the moment they enter the building until their day ends.  There are six cafes, each with a different theme: Asian street food, international specialties, grills, traditional salad bars, vegan salad bars, raw food bars, sandwich stations, juice bars, coffee bars and a specialty breakfast bar.  There is food everywhere!

Monday, I prepared and served a Korean specialty dish called bibimbap, which consists of a fried egg over rice served with braised short ribs and crunchy vegetables.  I never thought I would see a food truck inside an office building, but that’s exactly where I worked on Tuesday – inside that truck, making bubble tea and serving dessert.  My last three days were spent in three different kitchens prepping lots of veggies, meats and seafood that would become some of the most delicious and beautiful dishes I have ever seen.

Google wants the best for their employees, and that includes maintaining their health.  RA uses the best ingredients, many organic and some that I had never seen.  When I was given a large container of carrots to peel, I was amazed to see the different color varieties.  I had been using purple potatoes for years, but purple carrots?  Who knew?  The chefs design their menus to provide a wide variety of options, each of top restaurant quality, presented beautifully and tasting wonderful.  In addition, they use an extensive labeling system to alert the Googlers of any possible allergens.
As soon as you exit the elevator you realize that Google doesn't look like any other office building you've been in. Creativity oozes from its walls, literally.  The walls are white boards where Googlers can write or draw a thought that someone else may find inspiring, there are activities to keep the creative juices flowing.  A hydrated Googler is a productive Googler.  Googlers never walk far to get to one of the thirty plus themed micro-kitchens throughout the building. Each kitchen has a large variety of beverages, fresh fruit, cheeses, healthy snacks and some less healthy goodies.  The healthy snacks are displayed in clear glass jars, while the less healthy options are in closed containers.   One day you may stop by the LEGO micro-kitchen to get some M & M’s out of the LEGO head jars, and the next you may stop at the Ms. Pac Man micro-kitchen to get a beverage and an apple.

It’s an overwhelming task to keep six cafes, numerous micro-kitchens, and various catering events working as flawlessly as they do.  The entire RA staff does an incredible job.  They think outside the box and take advantage of the newest technology to bring the Googlers the finest dining experience possible.   I look forward to sharing my experiences with my students.

If you are a CTE culinary teacher and are interested in participating in an externship at Google this year please reach out to Sari David, Associate Director of Industry Engagement, at Sdavid5@schools.nyc.gov to learn more.

Reminder to complete
CTE Survey sent by
Chancellor Carmen Farina

The Partnership for New York City, a membership organization made up of 200 CEOs of leading businesses across the city has teamed up with the DOE in support of CTE. As a representative of top employers in the city, the Partnership has been looking for ways to improve and increase employer engagement in CTE across the city. In order to inform how to best to prioritize these efforts, the Partnership is working with the global accounting firm PWC to conduct a survey and analysis of the current status of employer engagement in CTE schools and programs.

Earlier this week Chancellor Fariña sent a note with a survey link to designated CTE contacts. The results of this survey will inform a second survey of employers to see where efforts can be concentrated to maximize impact and achieve optimal outcomes for CTE students. Responses are due back October 28.
